I tried shutting down and when I came back about 30 minutes later, the computer had rebooted. The good news is, at least after it went to sleep, I was able to wake it up easily.

After a couple of reboots, Santosh’s response above seems to have at least partially fixed the problem for me. The computer now shuts down when I want it to.
